CASE 17

A 39-year-old quadriplegic, BW has come to terms with his situation: He understands he will never function independently. To make matters worse, BW still anguishes over the death of his father in January.

In that death, BW's mother lost both a husband and a partner in the care of a son requiring assistance for all his basic needs. Age and money are now issues. Without the assistance of her late husband, the mother is struggling with the physical strain of caring for a son in need of constant lifting. The problem is exacerbated by the deterioration of home health care equipment, in particular an electric bed and the "hoyer" lift that is essential to the mobility of those without use of limbs.

Updated equipment to make the family's life a little easier tops their holiday wishlist. …
