Rockhurst Hands Washburn Men First Loss

Article excerpt

Things got off to a promising start for Washburn in Saturday's nonconference game against Rockhurst, with freshman Javion Blake burying a 3-pointer for the game's first points.

Unfortunately for the Ichabods, that was their only lead of the day, with Rockhurst rolling to a 75-51 victory at Lee Arena and ending the Ichabods' 32-game winning streak in nonconference home games dating back to 2005.

Rockhurst, which improved to 2-1, went on to build an 18-point lead on the way to a 37-23 halftime advantage. The Ichabods got no closer than 13 in the second half while the Hawks built a 25-point lead late in the game.

Washburn did not have a player crack double figures, with Blake leading the Ichabods with nine while sophomore Cameron Wiggins added eight points.

Freshman Austin LeVan led four Rockhurst players in double figures with 21 points (11 of 12 at the free-throw line) while junior Malachi Nix added 18 points (4 for 5 on 3-pointers).

"They played great," Washburn coach Bob Chipman said of the Hawks. "Wow, they hit every shot. They did such a great job offensively of just playing together and getting it inside to an open guy, hitting outside shots, getting to the free-throw line. …
