Police Collect Cellphones for Soldiers Overseas

PARK RIDGE - When borough Police Officer Chris Puglis served as a Marine in Afghanistan in 2004, he said the rare moments when he was able to call his family back home helped him keep focused.

With those memories in mind, Puglis has set up a program in which people can drop off used cellphones and chargers at police headquarters that he ships to Cell Phones for Soldiers, a national non-profit organization that provides calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

"Everyone likes to hear a familiar voice when you are serving overseas," Puglis said. "But the only way to do that is to pay for a calling card. This makes it so a service member has one less thing to pay out of pocket."

Last week Puglis shipped off more than 200 cellphones and chargers that had been donated by residents and businesses in Park Ridge as well as in surrounding towns, he said. …
