HE has written a best-selling biography and his first novel is now up for an ironic award for its steamy content, but a charming letter typed 32 years ago reveals Morrissey's more gentle, whimsical style.

The item was sent to Colin Howe, then just 25-years-old, who was hoping to secure an interview with an up-and-coming Manchester band who had yet to enjoy a single hit record.

Desperate to launch the first edition of his own fanzine, Colin wrote a begging letter to The Smiths' management asking for an interview in autumn 1983.

He received a personal reply from Morrissey suggesting Colin should meet them at a gig at Liverpool Polytechnic.

Dated 'September, presumably', it says: "Dear Colin, I would obviously be honoured to talk to The Portable Chat Show (fanzine) at any time that you wish. …
