What a great column ("U.S. War-Making Led to Paris Attack," Nov. 18) by Dan Simpson. We are so lucky to have him at the PG and in Pittsburgh. Having said that, I would like to add a few more points to his great analysis.

First, I think we have to trace the roots of the present assault by the Islamic State group beyond 2002 to the early 1980s and Ronald Reagan. President Reagan engineered the foundation of al-Qaida in the early 1980s with his arming and financing the mujahedeen in Afghanistan to overthrow the allies of the Soviets in power in Kabul.

From this egg was hatched the al-Qaida organization by Osama bin Laden and allies. The next step in the founding of al-Qaida was George H.W. Bush's posting of "infidel" troops in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the holiest sites of the Muslim religion are situated, to attack Iraq and Saddam Hussein. …
