LETTER: Affordable Care Act Isn't So Affordable

Dear Editor: Curtis Hallman's letter criticizes Republicans for their fight against the Affordable Care Act, saying the ACA makes health insurance affordable for the working poor. I contend the ACA is the worst piece of one-party legislation ever passed, and the people hurt most are the working poor. The cheapest Obamacare 2016 Bronze Plan for a single male Tuscaloosa resident earning $30,000 per year is $160 per month (after the premium subsidy). It has a $6,850 annual deductible. This poor guy pays $8,770 in premiums and medical expenses (29 percent of his gross income) before getting one penny in reimbursements. The monthly premium, after subsidy, for a family of four is $303, with a deductible of $13,700. These plans are not affordable.

The ACA then turns 26 million people who can't afford these plans into criminals. …
