The number of violent crimes, such as homicide, rape and aggravated assault, rose in Pittsburgh in 2014 compared with the prior year, city police said Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police released its 2014 annual report, which offers crime data and other information compiled by the department.

While property crimes, such as burglary, larceny and arson, decreased by 6.6 percent in 2014 compared to 2013, crime against people increased by 3 percent, police said.

Police reported 71 homicides in 2014 compared with 46 the year before.

Aggravated assaults rose from 1,259 in 2013 to 1,321 in 2014.

Rapes also increased -90 were reported in 2013 compared with 97 in 2014.

The clearance rate for homicide in Pittsburgh in 2014 was 48 percent; the national rate in 2013 was 64. …
