The Post-Gazette article "Study Finds Black Men Left Out of Pittsburgh's Rebirth" (Nov. 23) tells a story of widespread unemployment that the black community in our city knows too well. However, another impediment to economic security left unmentioned is that even those who have jobs are excluded from the growth happening in our city because of the low wages paid by our largest employers.

I'm a black man and a 16-year service worker at UPMC. Out of all major U.S. cities, Pittsburgh has the highest percentage of African- Americans working in the service industry. The sad truth is that as long as institutions like UPMC, which employs tens of thousands of service workers, pay workers too little to get by, we can't say we're on the path to end the racial divide in Pittsburgh. …
