The Democratic sweep of state judicial offices has suddenly awakened in our Republican-dominated Legislature the need for "reforming" how judges are elected. Surprise!

Complaining about the money spent on the election, the Republicans banish any thought of reforming campaign financing. Instead their answer is to remove voters from the selection process, in the name of the "merit selection" of judges. Are they saying that the voters chose unqualified candidates?

The "merit selection" of judges is supposed to remove politics from the judiciary. If you believe that, you probably also believe in the tooth fairy. Just look at the U.S. Supreme Court.

I want to know where judicial candidates stand on campaign financing, the rights of workers, gerrymandering, equality in school funding, abortion, gun control, racial discrimination in the criminal justice system and other issues. …
