Missouri Lawmakers Again Raise Problems with Lack of Communication on Stadium

JEFFERSON CITY * Missouri lawmakers at a hearing Monday again lambasted Gov. Jay Nixon for his lack of communication about a proposed new stadium in St. Louis.

The Nixon administration said earlier this year that the governor does not need legislative approval to use state money to pay for a portion of stadium's construction.

Many lawmakers dispute that fact but even if that were the case, they say Nixon should have talked to the Legislature about the plan anyway.

"Why would (the governor) leave a shadow of a doubt about it?" asked Rep. Justin Alferman, R-Hermann.

And they made sure Doug Nelson, Office of Administration commissioner, knew their feelings. Nelson was one of several people who testified at a House Budget Committee hearing on the proposal Monday.

The bonds that would fund a new stadium are subject to appropriation, meaning every year the Legislature would have to approve the money. …
