Runners throughout the area are getting ready for running in the cold winter as the temperature has started to drop. It's a time of the year when runners have to convince themselves to train when the weather is a bit chilly. I find running during the cold months a challenge because of all of the elements you have put up with while getting my training miles in. I talked to Hurricane Middle School Track Coach Jimmy Cunningham recently about the type of weather conditions runners should be aware of while exercising.

"For one, the coach said, "always be aware of ice. If you see anything wet out on the road, just assume it is ice and be very careful, because you could slip very easily on black ice and cause a preventable injury.

"Of course, be aware of snow, wind and, especially, the sun, because if there is snow on the ground and the sun is out, it could be very bright and distract you on your run.

To improve my time, I have been training with Coach Cunningham this fall.

Whenever I run I try to dress appropriately, wearing the correct clothing for what the weather is going to be during my run. Just to make sure, I asked Coach Cunningham to give me some suggestions if it was correct by wearing layers. "It depends if you are running in the night time or day time. It's important to check the weather forecast before heading out for a run, so you can dress in layers, because if the weather changes during the run and warms up you can discard a piece and continue on your run. I think gloves are also important, because, if I have cold hands, my run is miserable.

A good place to get the correct running apparel in the area is Robert's Running and Walking Shop in Charleston and Huntington.

I have been told that running during the winter will help make me a stronger and better runner. Eric Cooper, the first-year track coach for Hurricane High School, agrees with me about the importance of running during the cold months. …
