Alliance Reduces Production, Lays off Employees

TULSA - Alliance Resource Partners on Friday said it is halting production at one coal mine and reducing production.

Tulsa-based Alliance said the reduction in production will result in layoffs for approximately 260 employees.

"Unfortunately, prolonged weak market conditions made this production response necessary," said Joseph W. Craft III, president and CEO.

Production is being reduced at high-cost mines to maximize production at low-cost mines. Alliance operates 11 mining complexes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia.

Hopkins County Coal, an Alliance subsidiary in Madisonville, Kentucky, reduced production from three units to two units at its Elk Creek mine, which is scheduled to cease production in the first quarter. This action did not result in any job loss as a result of employment opportunities at other Alliance operations. …
