The Pittsburgh Citizen Police Review Board has compiled its own statistics on police pursuits.

The report contains best and current practices, risks, and purposes related to police pursuits and public safety, executive director Elizabeth Pittinger told her board members at a meeting Tuesday night.

The report, which was released in conjunction with a call for the review board to authorize full investigations of police policies that have recently been in the spotlight, such as vehicle pursuits and officers shooting at moving vehicles, was finished before the Nov. 22 chase that started with a traffic violation in Larimer and ended with a crash in Bloomfield that injured five people. Following that chase, Pittsburgh police Chief Cameron McLay ordered officers not to initiate pursuits unless they believe a violent felony had occurred.

Ms. Pittinger said there was no particular incident that triggered the report. "It's just a generalized concern of some high- risk police practices, and vehicle pursuits are right up there with responding to domestic violence calls. …
