High Hopes Star 'Leaves Mark'

Article excerpt

Adrianna Henderson has accomplished a lot in her Topeka High basketball career.

Just a year ago, the 5-foot-7 senior guard earned first-team All- City and third-team All-Class 6A honors and led the city in scoring with a 22.1 average.

She had three games of 30 points or more, with a high of 39, and she is is expected to go over the 1,000-point mark for career scoring early this season.

But Topeka High coach Hannah Alexander, whose Trojans were 9-13 last winter, has even higher hopes for her star guard in her final high school campaign.

"We've definitely had those conversations with her about leaving her mark here," Alexander said. "She may think that she has done that already but we keep telling her she's not done leaving her mark.

"It would be great for her to leave here with a state title. I told her, 'That would be my goal for you.' Of course, she's going to break some records here for us, but I think the big one would be leaving with a state title."

That may seem like a far-fetched dream for a team that has not been to the state tournament in more than a decade, but Alexander thinks she has the talent to make a strong postseason run.

In addition to Henderson, Topeka High returns junior center/ forward Erica Birch (6-1) and junior guard Rylee Burris (5-6).

Birch averaged seven points and five rebounds last season while Burris averaged four ponits and shot 35 percent from 3-point range.

Also back are senior forwards Jhailyn Johnson and Precious Posey, who saw varsity action last season, while junior Corieann Emanuel and senior transfers Ida Pieschl and Tonnia Scott are expected to contribute this winter.

Pieschl transferred from Washburn Rural while Scott transferred from Seaman and will become eligible in February.

"We've definitely got a lot of talent this year," Alexander said. …
