LETTER: Our Leaders Shouldn't Be Promoting Fear

Dear Editor: The reaction of many of our political "leaders" to the ISIS terrorist attack in France is a response driven by fear, cowardice and bigotry. These leaders include many of the Republican presidential candidates in addition to governors and congressional representatives from both parties who oppose admitting 10,000 Syrian refugees who have fled their homeland in search of freedom and safety. These leaders include our Gov. Robert Bentley and our entire congressional delegation, including Democrat Terri Sewell.

There is no doubt that these are unsettling and dangerous times. But fear which gives way to cowardice, and bigotry is not the answer. If the idea of American exceptionalism has any meaning, we need leaders who are courageous and have a backbone, leaders who inspire Americans to do what is morally right. …
