Well-Traveled Troubadour Makes His Topeka Debut

Hiroya Tsukamoto will express musical influences from three continents when he makes his Last Minute Folk concert series debut Saturday night.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka, 4775 S.W. 21st, where doors will open at 7 p.m. Tickets, which are $15, can be purchased at the door or in advance at www.lastminutefolk.org.

Born in Kyoto, Japan, Tsukamoto began playing the five-string banjo at age 13 but switched a year later to acoustic guitar.

"In high school, I started writing songs and playing rock music as everybody else did at the time," Tsukamoto said.

He began in college studies in 1994 at Japan's Osaka University, where he was introduced to a musical and social movement from South America called Nueva Cancion, which translates to "new song. …
