Wfdu-FM Gets a Bigger Boost

Article excerpt

WFDU-FM (89.1) has been busy.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University station recently strengthened its transmissions signal to three kilowatts, tripling its listening area. The station installed a new transmitter at the historic Edwin H. Armstrong broadcasting tower in Alpine, giving the station a fivefold boost in power and moving its antenna up twice as high as it was, to 774 feet above sea level.

"We have tripled our listening area and are getting reports of reception all over Long Island, all five New York City boroughs, most of northern New Jersey, and as far north as Wappingers Falls, N.Y.," said Duff Sheffield, program director and general manager at WFDU.

Earlier this year, the station was added to the iHeartRadio app and began broadcasting programming on three digital radio channels (HD1 -- The Essential WFDU; HD2 -- Jazz & What's More; and HD3 -- Masterworks).

The station operates from studios in Teaneck.

Born in Philadelphia, he attended public schools in San Diego and Los Angeles before winning admission to Yale at age 16 as a National Merit Scholar. He majored in American history and graduated with honors, before attending Yale Law School, where his classmates included Bill and Hillary Clinton.

"Michael's radio program is a great example of intelligence and common sense," said SRN senior vice president Phil Boyce in a statement. "Michael has logged 18 consistently successful years with Salem, and this deal means we'll continue to provide stations across the country with one of the most entertaining, provocative and popular shows on the air. …
