LETTER: Demagoguery an Ugly Political Tool

Dear Editor: Throughout history, some politicians have sought to expand their own power by encouraging hatred and exclusion of a particular race or group of people. It's called demagoguery. Identify a supposed enemy, demonize that enemy and then stir up prejudice against that enemy. It is an effective, if ugly, political tool. But to call it "Christian" is mistaken.

Christians follow Jesus Christ, and he admonished us to love our enemies, not hate them. His parable about the Good Samaritan is central to Christian teaching.

It's not just about one person helping another in need; it's about helping another even though his people live in a different place, believe differently and have been considered traditional enemies and objects of hatred for centuries. …
