The Epidemic of Gun Violence Has to End

Article excerpt

After yet another mass shooting in America, this time in San Bernardino, Calif., what shocks me most about my reaction is my total lack of shock. Sadly, mass shootings have become so much a part of American life that I no longer flinch when I see bullet- riddled bodies on the news.

Everything that will be said about this shooting has been said in the aftermath of others. Arguments will be posited by people of differing opinions. We've heard it all before.

But we, as citizens, have to answer one simple question: Is there too much gun violence in America?

A mass shooting is characterized as a shooting in which there are four or more victims. In America, we are on pace for more mass shootings in 2015 than there are days in the year.

The political bent of oft-proposed solutions - national databases, more armed security in public spaces, mandatory gun safety classes for gun owners, fewer gun-free zones - frankly, is of no matter to me. No, the only thing I care about is the number of dead we bury too young; the mothers and fathers who never get to hug their kid again; the siblings lost; the friends taken too soon.

Our country is in the throes of a gun violence epidemic. It's past time we reckon with it.

I am not the slightest bit afraid of the Islamic State group. And I am not afraid of Syrian refugees. What scares me to deathis the thought of an American with a handgun or assault rifle shooting up my daughter's car or my grandson'sschool. These are the thoughts that give me nightmares.

Sometime soon, America will reach the critical mass for firearms; there will be nonstop shootings in every city and in every state. There will be firearm accidents, firearm suicides and firearm homicides - day in and day out. Finally, the sensible people in this country willrealize that enough is enough. They will pack up their families, and they will find refuge in sanctuary countries around the world, where they can finally be safe.
