Fire destroys Topeka home

A fire early Friday destroyed a two-story house just west of downtown Topeka. No firefighters were injured while extinguishing the fire, said Rusty Vollintine, fire investigator for the Topeka Fire Department. The fire was on the northwest corner of S.W. 7th and Polk.

Vollintine said the fire in the house was discovered at 1:11 a.m. Friday by neighbors who smelled smoke.

The residents were away from the home at the time of the fire. The roof was burned off the structure, which appeared to be gutted.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but more than likely it was intentionally set, Vollintine said. Damage caused by the fire is estimated to be $8,000 to the structure and $12,000 to the contents, Vollintine said.
