Better Transportation Funding Sources Pushed

After cobbling together resources to fund the first long-range transportation bill in more than 10 years, U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster said Friday it is important to begin identifying sustainable funding sources for future bills as soon as possible.

Mr. Shuster, R-Blair, said Friday he is "very, very excited and pleased" that Congress this week passed a five-year, $305 billion transportation bill known as the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act. Mr. Shuster is head of the House Transportation Committee and chaired the joint House-Senate committee that produced the first long-term bill since 2005, which President Barack Obama signed Friday.

"It was a hard slog, but we got it done," Mr. Shuster said, calling the bill "a win for the American people."

But Mr. Shuster agreed with those who criticized the use of supplements, such as selling 66 million barrels from the military oil reserve, because of the shortfall of funds in the Federal Highway Trust fund. …
