ST. LOUIS * The underground visitors center at the Gateway Arch and the trams to the top will be closed for at least two months beginning Jan. 4 because of the major renovation work underway at the riverfront park.

Arch rides and some features of the visitors center will reopen in March or later in the spring, according to the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.

The $380 million reconstruction of the Arch grounds is to include a new, larger underground museum. The museum redo includes new exhibits, a much larger floor plan and a multilevel glass facade and entrance, facing downtown.

Work on that will continue, but a new gift shop, theater and restrooms will open when tram rides resume, a spokeswoman said.

The Arch grounds will remain open, and pedestrians still will be able to walk to the south leg and the main staircase. …
