THIEF'S 4-MILE JOYRIDE IN DOUBLE-DECKER BUS a ; Hunt for Crook Who Took Vehicle from Depot before Crashing It into Scaffolding

ATHIEF stole a doubledecker bus from a depot and took it on a four-mile joyride before crashing it into a building.

The Stagecoach bus was pinched from a depot on Clarence Street, Ashtonunder-Lyne, in the early hours of Saturday.

It was started up and taken out of the bus station at about 1.05am. The driver lost control and smashed into scaffolding and a building on Clegg Street in Droylsden 15 minutes later.

Police were called to the scene at around 1.20am.

The thief managed to escape from the stolen vehicle and left it scraped and dented outside the building. Eyewitness Ben Higginson saw the bus hit the building and says it nearly hit him before it crashed.

He said: "I was stood on the pavement at Droylsden police station walking towards the shop where it happened.

"It passed us at that point doing high speed but very close to the pavement and was inches from knocking me off the pavement. …
