11-Year-Old Girl Helps Younger Brother Escape St. Louis Home Fire

St. Louis firefighters are crediting an 11-year-old girl with saving the life of her 8-year-old brother from a house fire on Saturday that injured an adult man in the 4100 block of Tyrolean Avenue near Carondelet Park.

A fire broke out about 1 p.m. in a two-story home where a man and two children were residing, according to St. Louis Fire Capt. Garon Mosby. The girl was awakened by smoke and the sound of a smoke alarm. She immediately got her brother, left the house and called 911, Mosby said.

About the same time as the children were fleeing the house, a fire captain at a nearby firehouse was putting out trash when he spotted the smoke. He immediately got his company headed to the fire just as the fire call came in.

When the firefighters arrived, three rooms were ablaze, according to Mosby. …
