RUTHERFORD -- Citing his coming move out of New Jersey, Board of Education President Gary Novosielski tendered his resignation Monday night, at a meeting where the body later voted to start a preschool program next year.

Novosielski, who has served on the school board nearly 17 years, read a brief letter announcing he would step down effective Dec. 31. After the meeting, he said that his wife, a teacher, is retiring and that they would be relocating to Pennsylvania.

In his statement, Novosielski expressed gratitude to Rutherford residents "for granting me the privilege of serving them for nearly 17 years in a position of such trust, affecting the lives of the children of our community, a community that I happily called my home for 65 years."

The school board will have 60 days from the effective date of his exit to choose someone to fill his seat, officials said. …
