WEST MILFORD -- Voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved an $8 million bonding proposal to pay for replacement of the roofs on the district middle school and high school.

The vote was 1,409 to 148, according to unofficial results posted on the township's website.

Officials said before the referendum that the $8 million included $3.2 million in principal and interest that would be reimbursed by the state to the school district, and that if voters were to reject the proposal the project would still go forward, but property owners would be on the hook for the full bill.

Voters gave the go-ahead to borrow almost $4.7 million for repairs at the high school and more than $3.3 million for Macopin Middle School.

The roofs on the district's two largest schools are more than 20 years old, and efforts to keep them from leaking by makeshift patching are no longer working, officials have said. …
