After Toronto's Nazem Kadri scored what turned out to be the deciding goal in the top of the fifth round of the shootout, the Devils had a chance to answer in the bottom of the fifth.

Devils coach John Hynes made an interesting choice in sending out defenseman David Schlemko, who had the puck roll off his stick as he was attempting to tuck a one-handed shot around Maple Leafs goaltender Garret Sparks' left pad.

"That's kind of my go-to. It's worked for me in the past," Schlemko said. "I thought I had him, it just kind of rolled off my stick at the end, so tough luck."

Schlemko had taken three previous shootout attempts in his career, scoring on two of them - both deciding goals - and Hynes was well aware of that.

"It's not random at all," Hynes explained. "We have our shootout order set statistically where they are, who shoots best where and what they do. Schlemko, we've talked to. He feels comfortable. His shootout numbers are good, particularly later in the shootout."
