Wine Finds: Budget Barolo, Barbaresco

The Nebbiolo grape is used to make some of Italy's finest wines, including powerful Barolo reds. Considered by many to be that country's greatest wine, Barolo is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) located in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. Nebbiolo is also used in wines from Barbaresco, another prominent DOCG in Piedmont. Although these wines are made from the same grape, they are usually quite different in style, with Barolo being bigger in body and more expensive (starting about $45 and rising into hundreds of dollars). However, thanks to Trader Joe's, it's possible to taste entry-level Barolo and Barbaresco wines at affordable prices.
