Engine Fire Strands Train 4 Hours in Norwood

NORWOOD -- A 52-car CSX train was stopped for four hours on Tuesday after a fire broke out in an engine compartment of the lead locomotive.

The southbound train, which runs on the same line that CSX uses to transport crude oil to a Philadelphia refinery, was not carrying oil, said a CSX spokesman, Rob Doolittle. He said it was carrying a "variety of freight," including food products, lumber, cooking oil, automobiles and construction debris.

Norwood Police Chief Jeff Krapels said the borough fire and police departments both responded but that the fire was out by the time they arrived within minutes of getting a call about 5:30 p.m. The fire appeared to be small, and "there was no danger to the cargo," Krapels said.
