RIDGEFIELD PARK -- School officials said Wednesday night that a budget miscalculation has left the district with a shortfall of about $1.5 million for this school year and that they have come up with a plan to eliminate the deficit.

Eric W. Koenig, the superintendent of schools, declined to be specific about the plan, and said it was not available for the public to examine Wednesday night after the board voted unanimously to send it to be reviewed by the Bergen County school superintendent's office.

School board President Edmond DeSantis said the shortfall "appears to be a calculation error" of both revenues and expenditures. Koenig called it a "potential" shortfall and said that it was caused partly by underestimating the amount of tuition Ridgefield Park would pay this year for special education students going to schools in other districts. …
