THE Royal En eld Continental GT is what I'd call a grower.

If you're a fan of classic motorcycles, you can't fail to be impressed with the simplicity of the GT's traditional looks and its heritage. But I have to say, after having ridden a stream of much more modern bikes, in terms of both design and technology, it denitely wasn't love at rst sight for me and this noisy yellow hornet.

For a start, as a sixfoot-tall man, I wasn't immediately comfortable with its size and cafe racer dimensions.

at said, it certainly looks the part, with its single seat, downwardfacing clip-on handlebars and that classic, rasping, upswept stainless exhaust.

Its single cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled unit sounds every inch the 50s racer too and admittedly, that was the rst stage in my conversion.

I quickly came to realise that this isn't like hopping on a brand new Japanese bike. It's a modern take on what has become a much revered classic and should be treated as such.

After becoming accustomed to the riding position and the unique feel of the ride, I spent a couple of days really getting to know the GT and I have to say, it became one of my favourite rides of the year. …
