TOM Smith has revealed a chat with England legend Sir Ian Botham kept his spirits up as he battled through his recovery from a serious back injury.

Last month Smith stood down as Lancashire captain after less than 12 months in the role to concentrate on his fight for fitness after playing just one game last season.

He is now back batting in the nets, but the all-rounder still faces a race against time to be ready when the new campaign starts in April.

The 29-year-old admits he suffered some dark days last year as he was eventually told he needed an operation on the bulging disc problem that was preventing him from playing.

Lancashire's head of sports science Dave Roberts worked with Botham when he was suffering back problems in the 1980s, and has been good mates with him ever since - helping him with his many charity walks in of Leukaemia Research. …
