Rising Star to Headline Sarasota Democrats' Event

Sarasota will soon host one of the Democratic Party's rising stars and a leading candidate for the vice-presidential nomination.

Julian Castro gained prominence as the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. He will be the featured speaker at the Sarasota County Democratic Party's Kennedy-King dinner on Feb. 28 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, Castro became the youngest city councilman in San Antonio's history at 26 and later served two terms as the city's mayor before being appointed by President Barack Obama to a cabinet position overseeing the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Sarasota Democratic Party Chairwoman Christine Jennings said she has been working since June to bring the 41-year-old Castro to the region, calling him a dynamic figure who would make a good vice president because he can appeal to minority voters and "create excitement among the young people like President Obama did. …
