Finally, there is a nationwide offense so abominable that we should all be able to get behind it.

The offense? Shrinking toilet paper.

No, it's not your imagination. And no, your butt is not getting bigger. Well, maybe it is, but that's a different problem and one for which we wisely have no comment.

You should excuse the personal details, but, when I opened my most recent 24,000-roll pack of ultra-super-duper soft, cozy and strong, popular brand of TP, each roll was so short I wondered if I had a defective pack.

Even the cuddly bear on the package looked embarrassed.

After Googling "shrinking toilet paper" to see what the heck was going on, it became clear. Toilet paper makers have been quietly cutting the sizes of the squares from the standard 4 x 4 square.

Even more stealthily, while the squares are becoming more rectangular, the cardboard tubes inside the rolls are expanding. …
