Pat Cleans Up at Awards Ceremony ; Teaching Assistant and School Celebrate after Being Recognised for Environmental Work in Community

ATEACHING assistant who helped inspire her pupils, fellow teachers and local residents to help clean up their community has been named the Pride of Manchester.

Pat Smith, who works at Cheetham COFE Community Primary, was handed the accolade at the annual Be Proud awards, held at Manchester town hall.

The awards celebrate those individuals and groups who work hard to improve their local communities.

Pat and Cheetham COFE Community Primary School were also awarded the Clean City Award.

The honour recognises their achievements as part of the council's Clean City Programme and its Little Hands Make Big Changes project.

Pupils helped with the project which tackles the problem of litter by taking part in a clean-up.

After consulting with parents and local residents - and with support from the council and the Royal Horticultural Society - the pupils cleared an area of unused land off Newsholme Street, Cheetham, ready for planting.

The youngsters planted a number of bulbs which grew into bee- friendly plants to encourage pollination and help sustain the eco- system. …
