Temperatures in Pittsburgh on Saturday swept past the previous high of 65, set in 2007, to a record of 68 degrees.

The region also set a record for the bottom end of the scale with a low of 50. Saturday was the first time since 1927 that temperatures for Dec. 12 in Pittsburgh failed to dip into the 40s.

The mean for the day -59 degrees -also set a record, surpassing the old daylong average of 56 in 1965.

The record high for Dec. 13 will be a little harder to hit, but there's a chance, according to meteorologist Brad Rehak of the National Weather Service. The forecast for Sunday is near 70 degrees, and the record is 71.

Mr. Rehak attributed the warmth to a high pressure system over Bermuda that is bringing warm air clockwise from the south, a pattern seen more often in the summer. …
