THOUSANDS of shoppers hit Manchester's high streets and malls on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

With less than two weeks until Christmas Day, shoppers flooded the Arndale Centre and the city's high streets as they tried to pick up some last minute Christmas gifts.

While traffic piled up on the M60 motorway in south Manchester as drivers tried to make a beeline for the Trafford Centre.

City centre chief Pat Karney said Manchester has enjoyed a recordbreaking festive season despite an 'up and down' beginning.

He said bad weather and the Paris terrorist attacks meant there was a slow start to a normally busy period for traders.
