RIO Ferdinand has suggested Manchester United should be considering replacing Louis van Gaal with Carlo Ancelotti.

United were dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday and followed it up with a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday.

There has been speculation Van Gaal could leave at the end of the season if results don't improve - a year before his contract is set to expire.

But Ferdinand believes that could be too late.

And the former United defender insists that if United don't qualify for next season's Champions League by finishing in the top four or winning the Europa League, Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola will be tempted to go elsewhere.

He said: "Players are playing it safe because they are afraid of the consequences if they try to take chances. …
