Rise in Number of Reported Sexual Assaults in Manchester City Centre ; Increase Reflects the National Trend and Shows Victims Feel More Confident in Contacting Us, Says GMP

REPORTS of sexual assaults and violent crime in Manchester city centre has more than doubled in three years.

Statistics from police crime maps show there were 257 crimes reported in October 2015 compared to 120 in the same month in 2012.

But GMP believe better reporting procedures and increased confidence among victims are behind the rise, rather than an increase in incidents.

The figures from PoliceUK show Piccadilly, next to the gardens next to Lever Street, had the highest number of reported attacks during the month with 19. Sackville Street, next to Bloom Street, had 10.

There were also nine reported just off New York Street behind Piccadilly Gardens, eight near Debenhams on Market Street and five on Hope Street.

The statistics come as Piccadilly Gardens was named the worst crime blackspot in Greater Manchester and fifth worst in the country. …
