Every once in a while, you just want to smack yourself on the forehead, Homer Simpson-style, and let out a big "Doh!"

Some ideas, once uttered, seem so stupidly obvious that there's no other worthy reaction. We offer one on page N-6 today.

Cell phones have been around for years. They used to be kind of clunky, but they keep getting smaller and sleeker. Some people must have the newest and smallest and sleekest of everything (except vehicles, obviously, given that many such folks thunder around in SUVs). So sleek new cell phones move from store shelves into people's hands, and old cell phones -- perfectly good but no longer "the thing" -- keep moving from people's hands onto closet shelves.

You have to wonder: Isn't there some good use for all these old cell phones? …
