Christian Schornich, who for the past decade has worked at the United Nations, will be the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's chief operating officer, effective Jan. 1.

After conducting a national search to replace retiring COO Michael Bielski, the PSO found someone close to home. Mr. Schornich, who lives in Mt. Lebanon, is married to symphony violinist Eva Burmeister.

"The COO is really the internal operational lead for the institution," said president and CEO Melia Tourangeau. The organization's marketing and operations departments report to him, and he will be involved in the upcoming contract negotiations with the orchestra, which the PSO hopes to begin in late January, she said.
