RUBONIA

MANATEE COUNTY -- If residents of Rubonia want to at last see streetlights, sidewalks and other neighborhood improvements, Manatee County commissioners say their participation in an upcoming survey is crucial.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development relies on census tract information to award Community Development Block Grants to address blight in lower-income neighborhoods. Yet Rubonia, a predominantly minority area north of Palmetto, did not qualify for CDBG dollars after the 2010 census because of inadequate participation among its households and because of mobile home parks with higher-income residents in the same census tract.

On Tuesday, the County Commission pledged $21,500 for a survey of 100 to 150 Rubonia households by Wade Trim, the consulting firm it uses to compile CDBG grant applications. …
