Fixture Woes Can Be Eased in the Long Term If We All Pitch In

GIVEN the recent bad weather which has led to the grassroots football programme being decimated, it was felt that clubs would benefit from knowing the background behind the decision to postpone fixtures played on grass pitches under the management of Salford Community Leisure.

Wherever possible, we want grassroots football to be played in Salford.

However, under certain conditions permitting games to be played will have a detrimental effect on the pitches in the longer term. We now have a more flexible approach, and appreciate that on occasions not every pitch in the city is unplayable.

We have introduced the option of declaring that the pitches are playable at the referee's discretion on the day. But, we also understand there are costs to clubs associated to this if a match is postponed prior to kick-off. …
