Ramsey, Vernetti Head Back to KFNS

Article excerpt

Bob Ramsey and Jeff Vernetti are among the many alums of KFNS, and are set to soon be back on the active roster at 590 AM.

The longtime St. Louis sports-talk radio stalwart, which was off the air for most of this year because of financial woes, recently was leased by And when it took over, co-owners Randy Markel and Scott Gertken promised big moves. This is the first, as it was announced late Wednesday that Ramsey and Vernetti who now are on competitor WGNU (920 AM) are set to start at 590 AM on Jan. 4. They'll be on from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. weekdays, in the slot now occupied by Howard Balzer and sometimes Marc Lillibridge.

Balzer and Lillibridge will move to 1-3 p.m. and replace Jim Rome's nationally syndicated show which will be dropped.

Ramsey and Vernetti have gone into business with Markel for a baseball complex in the Lake of the Ozarks area, but Gertken said their radio show will be "a completely separate deal from KFNS.

"I couldn't be more thrilled to be working with both 'Rammer' and Vernetti. "

Ramsey said the dual roles created "a synergy, a match" but added that he will miss working for Tim McKernan, his boss at 920.

"Tim's great, multiple exclamations," Ramsey said. "It was a tremendous association," the move "has zero to do (with 920), it has all to do with partnering with Randy."

Vernetti echoed the sentiments.

"It's probably one of the only split-ups in radio history where there is no animosity," he said. "I have nothing bad to say about Tim, his staff, how we were treated. This is just a great opportunity for Bob and I in and out of radio."

McKernan was supportive.

"I couldn't be happier for them," he said. "I think (the partnership) is a great idea."

Ramsey and Vernetti, along with Chris Gardner, are on WGNU from noon-2 p.m. and McKernan said it remains to be determined how the lineup will be retooled, but he has known about the possible departure for some time so there planning has been going on. …
