City Could Allow Limited Opening of Art Factory

PATERSON -- After shutting down the Art Factory for safety violations last week, city officials say they are now offering the building's owners an opportunity to reopen on a limited and temporary basis.

Officials said the owners would have to hire several city fire marshals to be stationed at the building around the clock. Moreover, the city would not allow the building on Spruce Street to hold any events that would attract large crowds, like the recent Octoberfest and the Christmas party scheduled for last weekend that was canceled as result of the shutdown.

Officials said they were proposing the "controlled opening" in recognition of the several dozen artists and other businesses that rent space at the old mill complex. "It's really unfair to them that the building has been shut down," Paterson Economic Development Director Ruben Gomez said of the Art Factory tenants. …
