North Is Hammered Yet Again by Latest Tory Cuts ; Manchester, Rochdale and Bury Are Hit Hard While Somerset Gets MORE

NORTHERN town halls are being hammered YET AGAIN by government cuts -while leafy southern shires once more get a boost.

Another Pounds 32m is being wiped off the region's budgets from April, with Rochdale and Bury taking the biggest hits.

Bury's overall 'core spending power' will fall by Pounds 6.2m - a drop of 4.7pc, while Rochdale's spending power will fall by Pounds 8.1m.

Richard Farnell, leader of Rochdale council, said: "It's a slap in the face when councils in places like Somerset get increases in their grants. Meanwhile, hard-pressed councils in the north like Rochdale are getting hammered year on year."

Rochdale had already seen its budget cut by Pounds 200m under the coalition.

It was repeatedly in the top three hardest-hit in the country under successive rounds of cuts. …
