Harriette Carlisle's Dec. 11 letter ("Not in Our Corner")presented a commonsense picture of the subversive actions we should all have been prepared for by the Republicans. The worst now, I believe, is their decision to adopt the "shutting down the government when we don't get everything our way" practice.

Sadly, at the state level, lawmakers have taken the worst Republican Party strategies used in the federal government as their right to do the same thing.

It is their job to pass a budget. They were elected to do that. If any one of us failed to perform a job responsibility, we would no longer be in that position.

What gives them the right to hold people and necessary programs hostage? Of course, the programs that suffer are the ones affecting the children, the disabled, the infirm, the poor and, eventually, the veterans. …
