In response to "Obamacare Is Beyond Repair" by Sen. Pat Toomey, (Dec. 3 Perspectives): Mr. Toomey makes some good points that are well taken. Obamacare isn't perfect. However, it's important to remember that before Obamacare, people were denied insurance based on pre-existing conditions, and some conditions were not covered. People were very hurt by private insurance.

Private insurance, not Obamacare, constituted the real death panels. That is why we needed Obamacare in the first place. If private insurance was more available, affordable and protective of people's health, we wouldn't have needed Obamacare, but private insurance wasn't; therefore, we do.

I am fearful of private insurance without sufficient government oversight. I was denied enrollment and coverage by private insurance on more than one occasion, and I'm not alone. …
