GraceMed: Marian Clinic Closing Won't Change Safety Net Clinic Plans

GraceMed, which is in talks to take over Shawnee County's safety net clinics, said Marian Clinic's decision to close won't affect its plans.

Marian Clinic announced on Wednesday that it would close its medical clinic on Dec. 31, to focus its resources on providing dental care. The clinic has provided care to low-income, uninsured Shawnee County residents since 1988, with payments on a sliding scale. SCL Health, which sponsors Marian Clinic, said it advised patients to contact HealthAccess for assistance finding primary care from Shawnee County Health Agency or a doctor who gives charitable care.

Dave Sanford, CEO of Wichita-based GraceMed Health Clinic Inc., said the group had spoken to SCL about taking over both its medical and dental clinics. SCL decided to keep its dental clinic, so they "amicably" stopped talks after discussing the future of the medical clinic, he said. …
