Don't Blame Democrats for Liquor Reform Inaction

After reading the Dec. 11 editorial "Don't Call It Reform: The House Must Kill the Senate's Lame Liquor Plan," I felt compelled to respond to a part of the Post-Gazette's critique. The editorial board wrote that until recently, Democrats in the Legislature were the cause of the lack of reform to our wine and spirits system. I need to point out that we Democrats can't be held to a different standard than what the PG is giving to the Republicans, since before this year the Republicans controlled both the Legislature and the governor's office.

For the previous four years, Republicans had a governor who supported privatization and majorities in both the state Senate and state House, which each verbalized their support for reforming the state wine and spirits system, but during those four years nothing happened. …
